Origin

Phlorotanninsbelong to a special class of polyphenols exclusively found in brown algae.

One of the most studied class of phlorotannins are called “eckols” found in several Ecklonia and Eisenia species.

Biology

In a study performed by Australian botanists three different kinds of function of phlorotannins were suggested during wound-healing of damaged tissue in brown algae: wound sealing, structural healing, and defense.

Furthermore, hundreds of scientific studies have revealed a wide-spectrum bioactivity of phlorotannins.

Chemistry

The distinctiveness of Phlorotannins arises from their molecular structure, which differs from that of terrestrial polyphenols.
