Phlorotannin

Biology

Phlorotanninsare a special class of polyphenols exclusively found in certain species of brown algae.

The beneficial roles of Phlorotannins may have been hinted to us for very long time.

Their orgin, brown algae, have been living in our planet for 170 million years.

Among their various ecological roles, their active involvements in the healing process of damaged cells is especially intriguing.

Most notable phlorotannin molecules are called “eckols” originated from several Ecklonia and Eisenia species..

Biology

In a study performed by Australian botanists three different kinds of function of phlorotannins were suggested during wound-healing of damaged tissue of brown algae: wound sealing, structural healing, and defense.

Wound Sealing

The Presence of phlorotannins at the wound surface in the early stage of wounding corresponds to a sealing function of phlorotannins and would also help to prevent microbial attack.

Structural Healing

The deposition of phlorotannins into cell walls contributes to structural strengthening during wound-healing.

Defense

Phlorotannins function as a chemical defense agent that deters herbivores from further damaging and prevents infection by microbes such as bacteria or fungi.

Chemistry

Molecular Structure of Phlorotannins

The Phlototannins are polymers of phloroglucinol which works as a molecular building block.

When we scrutinize the molecular structures of phlorotannins a little bit, we can immediately notice that they have hydrophobic benzene rings in the core together with multiple hydrophilic -OH groups in the periphery.

The uniqueness in the chemistry of phlorotannins is that they are made of only one molecular building block called "Phloroglucinol".

Difference from Land-based polyphenols

Phlorotannin molecules are chemically unique in that they only have aromatic carbons.

At the same time, their multiple aromatic rings are completely connected via π-p-π and/or π-π bondings throughout the entire molecules, leading to very unique electronic property compared with land-based polyphenols

The multi-ring structure (6~10 rings) makes a phlorotannin molecule a ultra potent electron trapping machine against any kind of free radical: Resveratrol (2 rings); flavonoids (3 rings), catechins (4 rings).

Cellular Health

Aspects of Cellular Health

Our body is made of trillions of cells that are perfectly orchestrated.

Therefore, the health of the body is only possible when our cells are healthy. When the cellular health is attained, bodily health naturally manifestes.

There are numerous signs of cellular health that we can easily recognize in our daily life. To name a few,

  • Fitness
  • Bright (radiant) facial tone
  • Physical activeness, balance, mobility, flexibility
  • Feeling light, energetic, fatigue-resistant
  • Good sleep at night
  • Pleasant body odor
  • Smooth and well-hydrated skin
  • Resilience to temperature fluctuations
  • Bright mind, happiness
  • Comfortable gut & bowel movement
  • Good quality stool
